Genius Hour Semester 2 Reflection and Evaluation
Your Name: Cassie LaFave
The Title of Your Genius Hour Project: Vegetarianism
Summarize the purpose of your Genius Hour project in 140 characters.
Explain the process of your Genius Hour project. Be reflective. Be contemplative. Explain and describe your journey. (No Less Than Three FULL Paragraphs.)
There’s a few things I learned not only about my topics throughout the year, but myself included. I’m really glad I had the time to do research on Mental Illnesses and being a Vegetarian. These are two totally different topics, but they are both something I have a great interest in. The topics I chose definitely reflect on who I am as a person, and I believe it shows through my website. Being a Vegetarian, and having mental illnesses are something that don’t really go hand-in-hand at all but both things I am passionate about. I hope everything I have put together really makes an impact on the viewers!
Last semester, I was beyond nervous to talk about my Genius Hour Project. Mental Illnesses are something that should be taken very serious, but unfortunately some people have potato brains. It wouldn’t be as nerve wrecking if this topic didn’t hit so close to home. There are so many people who do not understand what it’s like to have a mental illness, but mental illnesses are not all mental. Mental Illnesses can have a huge physical impact on the body, and can also affect your peers, family, etc. When doing my presentation on this topic, it was very clear how nervous I was. I hope the information I included in my presentation helped my peers understand just a little more about what I deal with everyday. I didn’t want to ask for attention by mentioning that I have mental illnesses, but I was hoping I would get positive feedback.
This semester, my topic is something I am a lot more comfortable talking about. Being a vegetarian is seriously such a rewarding experience overall. I’m only about a year and a half in, but I still feel good about myself every single day for it. My project for this semester is not quite as serious as last semester, but it is definitely an eye opener. My goal is not to make people stop eating meat, or to make them vomit, but to open their eyes to a whole new world. There is a lot about this project that will make the viewers cringe and probably hate me, but my only goal is to educate my viewers. Being a vegetarian, I already know tons about what the animals go through on the factory farms, but wow did I learn so much more by doing this project. Throughout my project I go into great depths about testing on animals, factory farms, and how animals help the environment.
The intention For Genius Hour is NOT only to learn, but ALSO to share your knowledge with others who can and will benefit from your learning. How did you share your learning? What do you hope the result might be? (No Less Than Two Full Paragraphs.)
Well, the knowledge I’m about to share about animals is literally going to scar some people for life, I’m not kidding. The pictures and videos I will be presenting are literally beyond disturbing. The facts are shocking, but nothing compares to when you actually see it. In my presentation I talk about testing products on animals for a section, and one brave woman shows us what it’s really like to go through animal testing. Being passionate about animals is something a lot of people take pride and joy into doing, and some people are willing to risk their lives for it. I knew a lot about unfair treatment to animals before I was vegetarian, but there is so much more that goes on behind the scenes..
My overall goal is to educate as I mentioned before. I would be completely happy if I even changed one person’s mind about being Vegetarian. My goal is not to turn people into vegetarians, but to respect them. There are a lot of people who just think it’s stupid, like do you even really know what a vegetarian is? I mention being a Vegan also, but that it truly a whole different spectrum. I do not go into great detail about it because it is not my lifestyle yet, but I do compare the two so people get an idea of the differences and similarities.
If you could do anything different with your Genius Hour project what would you do differently and why? (No less than two full paragraphs.)
I truthfully wouldn’t do anything too different with my project. I’m really happy with the topic I have right now, and the one I had last semester. If I had unlimited funds I would make sure that no animals would ever have to suffer again. I wouldn’t mind doing some sort of fundraiser, or some way to raise money to give to a charity of my choice. I know the charities I have picked are truly dedicated to saving animals. One day I really hope to be a part of one. I wish I would have began educating people about being a vegetarian long ago, but sadly I have only been a vegetarian for about a year and a half.
I know my presentation will show people what animals really go through in factory farms, animals testing, and how they actually help the environment. A lot of what I’m going to talk about is truly going to open up the eyes and ears of my viewers. I truly feel good about what I did this semester with my project, I really hope to get a lot of feedback, whether it be positive or negative. I hope some people will consider going cruelty free, and meat free. There is always a way to start. A fresh start is always good, especially if it makes you happy, which doing this presentation will make me feel better about myself!
Reflect on what you did well during this Genius Hour process? Note your successes and accomplishments. (No less than two full paragraphs.)
Include any videos, pictures, presentations, or artifacts that will document your journey.
I truthfully did not have to do much for my Genius Hour Project, considering I am already a Vegetarian. There’s a lot more to being a Vegetarian than just not eating meat, but I already knew that. I would like to believe that I learned a lot about myself throughout this process, but I also learned a lot about the animals. I truthfully was not aware of how much animals truly help the environment. I watched a TED Talk spoke by a man named George Monbiot, who truly opened my eyes. George talked about animals in Yellowstone National Park, and how bringing the wolf population back helped changed the park for the best.
There’s not much progress I can show because this wasn’t a goal of any sort. I do know that I have saved about 286 animals. I also have not eaten 276 lbs. of meat, and 2,276 lbs. of CO2 has not been released into the air. I hope to show more progress by educating people about the vegetarian lifestyle, and also by hopefully making some people conform. I can’t say I have any pictures to include, but I did get a puppy who is my absolute world, and I will do nothing but my best to take care of him!
